FOUR NEW KNITTING TECHNIQUES

1. The first (and probably the most profitable!) of the new knitting techniques you'll need to learn is CABLE stitches. There are literally hundreds of variations of cables, but the basic knitting technique is the same for all of them. Knitting cables, or 'Aran' knitting, involves setting aside a number of stitches, knitting the stitches next to them in the row, and then knitting the ones you've set aside. The result of cable knitting techniques is all kinds of beautiful 'raised' patterns, which will add to your knitting expertise.

2. Another one of the knitting techniques a professional knitter should know is called 'intarsia' knitting, which involves being able to add a different color of yarn in the middle of a row. Once you've mastered intarsia knitting techniques, you'll be able to experiment with literally thousands of color combinations in your professional knitting career!

3. Not exactly on the list of knitting techniques, the 'Russian join' is nevertheless an important finishing skill for a knitter-for-profit to perfect. The Russian join is a particular way of 'tucking in' all those loose yarn ends that every project gets, and it is one of the most professional knitting techniques you can add to your skills.

4. 'Picking up stitches' is one of the knitting techniques that will save you a great deal of time - and time is money to a professional knitter! Instead of casting on stitches to create a sleeve, for example, you create a new starting row by 'picking up' the yarn in the "ladders" between the first and 2nd stitch on an existing row.

To learn these knitting techniques, and lots of others, do a Google search for each of the terms - you'll find lots of great instructions and diagrams to get you started!
