Ayurvedic medicine or ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine which was founded in Indian subcontinent. It is categorized under alternative system of medicine. It is ancient system of medicine. The oldest known documented ayurvedic texts are Charaka Samhita and Susruta Samhita. This classical Sanskrit encyclopedia of medicine contains all the compiled work of Ayurveda.
Like other ancient system of medicine, ayuvervdic system has taken approach of itemizing bodily matter in the frame work of five elements, Water, fire, air, earth and aether, deeming seven "tissues" dahtu of adipose tissue (medha dhatu),blood(rakta dhatu), plasma (rasa dhatu) flesh (mamsa dhatu) bone (asthi dhatu) reproductive (sukra dhatu) and marrow (majja dhatu)
Ayurvedic system of medicine put emphasis on the balance of three elemental substances (doshas) Vayu/vata (air and space- wind), pitta (fire and water-bile); kapha (water and earth-phlegm).One ayurvedic theory believes that every human being possesses a combination of dohas that describes the person's characteristics and temperament.
In ayurvedic system of medicine there are twenty inbuilt qualities in all the substances, positioned in ten pairs of antonym such as hot/cold, dull /sharp, heavy/light, soft /hard, viscous/liquid, minute/gross, non slimy/slimy, unctuous/ dry, smooth/coarse and stable/mobile.
Ayurvedic practitioner uses all the five senses to diagnose the diseases. Problem in the lungs is diagnosed by hearing the breathing. The study of marma is of great significance in this practice. While diagnosing ayurvedic practitioner considers mental and physical existence of patients as a unit. They believe that one can influence the other.
Many Ayurvedic medicines are made up of variety plants for example cardamom, bark of Arjuna tree, cinnamon, animal products like milk, bones. Minerals like sulphur, arsenic, lead, gold, silver and copper. Animal fat is also used for consumption as well as for external use. Different oils are also used in different ways such as regular consumption in food, by way of head massage, smearing or applying in the infected area. The practice of panckarma is a popular way of eliminating toxins from the body.
In India ayurveda research is supported by the government. About hundred colleges offer degree course in traditional ayurvedic medicine. In 1971 Central council of Indian Medicine was inaugurated. Government of India is doing a lot to so that it can be studied major towns and cities. A state funded Central council of Research in ayurvedic science was founded to promote research in this field. Many doctors practicing in rural and urban clinics are from these institutes.
