Knitting for profit requires a certain kind of personality, and not everyone will fill the bill. If you've ever thought about knitting to make money, it's possible that you already have that personality, and you're off to a great start.

KNITTING FOR PROFIT: 5 QUESTIONS TO DETERMINE IF IT'S FOR YOU

If you think you might be one of those folks who'd enjoy knitting for profit, there are some things you will need to consider first.

1. Are you knitting for 'the long haul'? Establishing a knitting business will take awhile, possibly as long as a year or two. So you need to be someone who really loves knitting, and has the patience to keep it up for awhile.

2. Can you work from your own home? If you are knitting for profit, you can't afford any overhead, so you will need to run your knitting business from home. Is it manageable? Do you have space? Do you have support?

3. Are you resourceful? In other words, you can't possibly know everything you need to know to be in the knitting business ... but if you know HOW to know, or WHO to know, you're well on your way! You need to be able to .... ask for advice, look things up, stay current with trends, etc. .... so you'll need to be a resourceful business person!

4. Can you be professional? Sure, it'll be nice to sit at home and knit in your bathrobe, but when the time comes, can you present yourself professionally at craft shows and consignment stores? Being professional means .... dressing the part, being on time, having marketing materials available, etc. Is this you?

5. Are you a lifelong learner? There's no such thing as knowing it all, especially as a professional knitter - so you'll need to be prepared to constantly upgrade your skills. You might want to take courses, have subscriptions, join a local Guild to take workshops - whatever works for you, but plan to have the time, money and motivation to follow through with ongoing learning!

If knitting for profit is for YOU, good luck with it!
